Who burps really loud in public?

Apr. 04, 2012

Tiara in her new outfit
Well, Tiara does and she thinks it is really funny.  If it weren’t so embarrassing and rude to the other people around us I would think it was really funny too.  OK, I am lying, it is really funny, but I try not to laugh when she burps in public because I don’t want to encourage the behavior.   I am mortified and laughing inside because it is so crazy.  I have also learned to keep my eyes averted to her face because I don’t want to see the horrified looks of the people around us.  I can’t even describe how awkward it is when we are at a restaurant, Tiara is eating, rather caveman like, and then she suddenly stops and produces this huge burp while throwing her head back so the sound echoes throughout the room.  To make it even worse, she then laughs and follows it up with a loud proclamation ” I burp, Mom I burp!”  She is actually really proud of herself.  Lou and I usually just look at each other with wide eyes and I immediately turn to her and say  “Tiara, that is very rude, say excuse me.”  I may have to repeat this several times until she finally says “ce, ce. ” That is her version of excuse me.

The reason I am even telling you about these embarrassing moments that happen all the time is because it happened in front of her neurosurgeon on Monday and I was rather surprised by his reaction.  I figured it wouldn’t even phase the man.  He spends his day dealing with children who have epilepsy and in many cases then performs brain surgery on them to try and stop the seizures.  He has personally told me how devastating seizures are to the brain and it is his life’s work to try and stop the seizures so kids can grow and develop normally.   So a man like this wouldn’t be fazed by an inappropriate burp.  Wrong!  He was shocked and actually stopped talking midstream to stare at her.   I of course went straight for my ” say excuse me, Tiara.”  She hedged a while, but he waited for her to respond  to which she said “ce, ce.”  He then said something funny like ” I guess you don’t take her out to win friends and impress people.”  His comment surprised me and kinda sat funny with me, but I just changed the subject and went right back to talking about her MRI images.

I woke up thinking about his response to her burp this morning.  I realized that even though he has devoted his life to helping these children, he doesn’t really understand what life looks like when you have seizures everyday.   You do inappropriate things, you act inappropriately, you say inappropriate things but you can still impress people and win friends despite all this.  I also realized yes, he too is human.  He may be a brain surgeon and save lives but like the rest of us he isn’t perfect.  I still adore him and am super grateful to have him as Tiara’s doctor.

Happy Wednesday, and if you see us in a restaurant, BEWARE.

Who is tiffani?

Mom, Wife, author of Loving Tiara, retired home stager, and chronic volunteer. I laugh when I'm happy, nervous, or stressed, so basically, I'm always laughing, and you can hear me from down the block if the windows are open. I love to swear even though it isn't ladylike, and I'm brutally honest, but in a super nice way, or so I think? I tend to roll my eyes, and apparently, my face is very expressive because even when I don't open my mouth, everyone knows what I'm thinking. My hubby and I are homebodies; I'm obsessed with always doing the "right thing " and taking care of my skin. I love learning, am always trying to evolve as a human being, and am a bit of a perfectionist. Let's have some fun! xoxo tiffani
