As most of you know I have to be constantly engaged in a project or I go stir crazy. Since my house is still in a holding mode, I can’t obsess on any home improvements, moving plans or the garden so I have decided to focus on the way we eat.
I love eating healthy and learning about food but lately I keep falling off my “program”. I think it is the stress from the house ordeal and caring for from my lovely children that keeps sending me to the cookie jar. I keep going for the sugar and it is driving me crazy. I decided I needed to read some new information or follow a program to really motivate me to stay off the sugar.
I went to the book store after Pilates yesterday and found this book, The 100. I loved it instantly because it is all science based and goes through the history of mankind and the development of our eating patterns along with the onset obesity and cancer. It appears that once we started farming, things started going downhill for the Americans in the weight and disease department. Do you like my really scientific explanation of the premise? Haha, the book really explains how our body deals with carbs and sugar and prevents us from losing weight.
It also talks about the fact that cancer cannot survive in the body unless you feed it sugar. This really shocked me. I think I have heard this before but I needed to hear it again to really take it in.
This is just the kind of book I need to get my health priorities in line. It’s about losing weight but also about how you will feel without the sugar in your life. Healthy mind, body and spirit along with a lean body at that!
I talked to my family and begged them all to work the program with me and everyone agreed except Trinity. Which is fine because she is super skinny but I think the program will rub off on her without her totally committing. I know this because this morning she was feeling left out while she ate pasta for breakfast and we were eating eggs with spinach and 2 pieces of bacon. She asked me for a gluten free yogurt without high fructose corn syrup in it. I secretly started laughing and said “Did you want some Greek yogurt, Honey, Is that what you meant?” “Hmmm, yes that’s what I want Mom.”
She likes to be in the loop. I bet she will be leading the food program and bossing everyone around about what they should and shouldn’t eat within days.
Anyways, I am really hoping this is the program that will help get my family off sugar and carbs and leading a healthier life. It was really hard for me this morning because I never eat stuff like bacon, but boy was it good. I don’t eat much protein and tend to gravitate towards veggies but I think this program is going to give me a better balance.
The biggest issue now is how much time it takes me to prepare all the meals. Luckily I had everything in the house for the breakfast but after we ate, TT and I had to make a huge Trader Joe’s run. I then unloaded the car, fixed the grilled shrimp and Caesar salad lunch along with the allocated snack and delivered them to Tabitha’s work with Tiara in tow.
Not surprising, but Tiara wouldn’t get in the car unless I promised her a Slurpee. WOW, that clearly isn’t’ on the program. Oh well, we stopped and I got her the sugar free one which still isn’t good for her, but better than the regular one. She is going to be the toughest one to convert but I’ll keep trying, baby steps.
It looks like I am going to be spending all my time in the kitchen until we all learn how to eat on the program. I have committed to making all three meals a day for Tabitha, Tiara and I and dinner for Lou. Along with a variation of whatever we eat for Trinity. Hmmmm, you are probably wondering what kind of wacko would agree or actually encourage such a time consuming program. That would be me! I think I am a glutton for punishment or I am obsessed with doing the best I can for my family.
Have a great day!

Your kids are blessed. If I had a mom (or anyone, for that matter) who wanted to prepare healthy meals for me 3x/day, I would bow in their presence!

We don’t eat sugar either. The grown up kids and my husband do cheat when away from home though. If I want something sweet I use xylitol. I’m a vegetarian so my protein mostly comes from cashews and tofu. Good luck! I know you’ll all feel much better.

Wow … great luck with the program Tiffani. It is definitely something I need to work on … eating less sugar.
I’d rather have sweet than salt so {as I shove a mini Kit Kat in my mouth} something I need to fix!!
