When we bought our house 9 years ago I had all the original frame-less mirrors in the bathrooms changed. I went to an inexpensive store and bought gold and silver ornate framed mirrors to put over the bathroom sinks. They looked great but 9 years later, those same mirrors have started to look old and outdated. I recently painted the front bathroom a pretty blue and once I was done I realized the old gold mirror looked hideous with my new paint job. At first I thought it was the crazy flower tiles causing the problem, which are original to my 1960’s home. Oh well, I better find another problem because I couldn’t afford to change them out when we bought the house and unless I win the lottery I am living with those tiles for the rest of my life.
Instead of buying something new, I decided to paint the mirror that blue/green peacock color that is so popular. Lucky for me one of my fabulous friends has amazing style and had painted her bathroom the exact color I was looking for. She lent me the paint and off I went. I first taped off around the mirror with blue tape and dusted the frame. Then I grabbed a paint brush and sat on the sink and painted for about an hour. You need to put the paint on really thick and dab it into all the crevices. Leave the mirror on the wall because it is much easier to paint this way. After it dried I touched up the spots I missed and it totally transformed the room. An outdated mirror now looks hip, modern and fresh and it cost me nothing. It may cost you a quart of paint if you don’t have any friends with cool paint hanging around but the paint will cost less than $15.00. If you try this go with a super funky bright color like orange, pink, teal, or high gloss black, because it brings a modern look and is so much fun. I would work on any mirror in your house, especially that boring one hanging over your fireplace. Happy painting….
