Not much to report today but I didn’t want to leave you hanging without any information so here is the most recent update.
Tiara has remained stable and there was a slight improvement in her x-ray this morning. Her kidneys continue to improve as well and since the kidney issue was deemed an “acute injury” brought on by her extreme illness they believe she will regain full use of her kidneys within time. Hopefully within a few weeks but at the longest a few months.
Ooh, doc just walked in, another update. Kidneys have lost their momentum as he just told me so she has to go back on a lasix’s drip. She was on a drip for a few days and she did so well they took her off yesterday and switched her to lasix’s every 6 hours but now she has taken a step backward and has needs the lasix’s constantly again. Laxis’s is a drug that helps pull fluid from the body so you don’t retain water.
We discovered a large skin breakdown on her bottom today which was really surprising to me because that never happened in 2 1/2 months at UCLA and yet she has only been laying in bed 9 days this visit and the area is really blistered. Physical therapy came and looked at the area since they are responsible for wound care, which is so odd to be, and they covered the break down with this black mesh gauze that is supposed to heal it up right away. We will see tomorrow.
As for respiratory, she is still sedated and her doctor hopes to take her off the ventilator tomorrow. I personally don’t think it is going to happen, it is too soon. Their goal was to decrease the vent settings every 6 hours today to keep her on target for tomorrow but she hasn’t responded well to the decreased settings so they haven’t been able to maintain their goals. For selfish reasons I would rather them wait until Saturday since I will be gone on Friday for Trinity’s birthday, but Lou will take good care of her while I’m away if they decide she is ready to come off.
Tiara has been on propofol for 55 hours thus far which exceeds the maximum time allowed of 48 hours. Since it is working so well for her and she still needs to be sedated at least until tomorrow the doctor has to get clearance from some safety department in the hospital. As a result they tried to reduce her dose a little today to show they were keeping her on the least amount of medication necessary. Guess what she did? She started biting her tube and giving me the meanest looks you have ever seem from someone who isn’t even conscious. She really cracks me up. I kissed her forehead and she pursed her lips as if she was saying “get the hell away from me lady!” Oh, TT ….
So the plan is this. She gets off the ventilator sometime within the next few days and then remains in the hospital until she is able to breathe room air without any oxygen while awake. Thinking we have about another week here. Will update tomorrow if possible.
