Last week I posted about a Craig’s list scam I inadvertently became involved in while selling some old furniture. I had turned over all my emails to the detective and thought I was done with the issue. That was until I received an email from the ring linger of the operation. He emailed me regarding the fraudulent check he sent me for $1450 from a Rug Company in Georgia.
He instructed me to immediately deposit the $1450 check into my personal bank account. Keep the cost of my furniture they were purchasing from me ($65) plus a few hundred dollars just for “my running around efforts”. Withdraw the rest of the money ($1,185) and send it via Western Union to: and they gave me a name and address. I mean how naive do they think I am?
I immediately forwarded the email to the detective and didn’t respond to their request. I really wanted to call him a bunch of rude names like crook, thief, loser, etc… but I didn’t want to tip them off that I knew about their scam. Who knows what kind of people I am dealing with, they may want retribution, clearly they are horrible people but are they violent too?
So a week goes by and I receive another email from this guy asking why I haven’t responded nor sent him $1100 of my own money. Ha ha. So once again I ignore his email and don’t respond.
The next day I receive an email via Craig’s list asking me if the Vintage Office Chair is still available? Aha Ha, someone wants the chair.
The potential buyer asked a few questions and then left me a phone number. I decided to just call him and answer his question to see if I finally had a buyer for the chair. When “Steven” didn’t answer I left him a voice mail with the answers to all his questions. I saw he had called me back late that night and I finally got around to listening to the voice mail on Monday. As I listened my intuition started yelling at me “something is not right here Tiffani!”
The message was garbled and very odd. He thanked me repeatedly for responding so promptly and asked another question about the integrity of the chair. This time I decided to respond via email as my creeper meter was alerting me to a problem. Well once I received his response to my email I knew he was either a serial killer or the ringer leader of the scam circling back under another name .
Just to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind I had Tabitha and her friends listen to the voice mail and read the final email. They all agreed a murderer was trying to get me or it was the people from the original scam. This time I replied to the email: “Sorry the chair is no longer available.”
Hopefully that is the last time I hear from them and I have decided to give the chair to charity. Something about that chair and Craig’s list brings out bad stuff.
Hoping this is the week we sell the house. Just dropped the price $100,000! It is now a great deal and we already got a showing request within 2 hours of dropping the price. Looks like it is going to be a busy week of cleaning and showing!

That sounded so scary and can’t even imagine. My mother always said to go my gut and think you totally did the right thing with donating the chair to charity after that. And totally still got fingers crossed for you selling your house!! 🙂 xoxo!!

I always go with my gut and when I haven’t it didn’t’ work out well for me.

Definitely best to follow your instinct. Good luck with the house.

Thanks Stacie, hoping this is the week it sells.

I’ve heard of the overpaying scam, but never involving a random company like they did. I started putting cash only on all my Craisglist ads. I found it cut down drastically on scam replies.
tiffani says
I know it was pretty crazy! Stating “cash only” is a great idea!

Oh my! What a scary situation. Hopefully you don’t hear from them again.
Best of luck with the house!

I know, I hope they don’t contact me again. As much as I love living in your neighborhood, I hope someone buys it soon.

That’s really scary. Doing business on Craig’s list can be dangerous! Hope your house sells this week! Now that I want to move I see how hard it is to wait!
tiffani says
Waiting is the worst!

Makes me not want to ever post anything to Craigs List!
