If you have been reading my blog for a year, you know about my couch saga but for everyone else and those who have forgotten all the gory details, let me catch you up. Two years ago I bought a white leather sectional from Macy’s after much deliberation. I mean I obsessed over getting the right couch. Are you already laughing that I bought a WHITE couch when I have the most destructive special needs child in the world? I know, I am a total idiot but I had to have a white couch to compliment my lime and white stripes in the family room. Despite Tiara’s destructive ways, I was still born with a sense of design which I can’t get rid of . Makes for a hard life at times.
I have tried slip covered pieces in the past but the urine and vomit from Tiara eventually destroy the piece. Over time we have learned we can ONLY have leather furniture in our home which totally sucks, but it is what it is.
November of 2011 I purchased this couch along with the “No worry warranty” which covers stains, punctures and burn marks. Every time Tiara took a pen to the couch I was on the phone calling for the technician to come clean it. I mean the Macy’s warranty is literally the greatest invention in the world of furniture. Each time the nice guy would come clean the couch and if he couldn’t get out the stain he would call Macy’s and tell them they needed to replace the piece of the damaged sectional. As a result in the past 2 years Macy’s has replaced 3 out of the 5 pieces of my couch. Amazing! I never begged, yelled, got angry or threatened. They literally just offered each time. I was actually starting to feel a little guilt that they were so nice and Tiara was so destructive.
So my most recent issue was the frame broke on one of the pieces. My sweet TT strikes again. The broken frame isn’t covered under the “No worry policy” but under the manufactures warranty. The first guy came out and said they could fix it but it would take 3 hours so he had to reschedule. Macy’s called and rescheduled for this past Thursday. The technician showed up Thursday and declared the piece could not be fixed. “What?” He explained it was so destroyed he couldn’t fix it but Macy’s would give me a new piece. Whooooo! So once again he left and Macy’s promised to deliver the new piece on December 17. Phew! I was kinda freaking about get a new white piece which wouldn’t match my other 4 dirty white pieces. FYI, after so many cleanings the leather starts to get stripped away. As a result it gets dirty easier so I eventually stopped calling the technician for every little stain months ago and I have learned to live with a less than perfectly white couch.
Friday morning I received a call my Macy’s and they said my couch was discontinued and they didn’t have the piece in any warehouse. “Oh no!” Get this, are you listening?
The nice lady then said, we have 2 options:
1. We can pick up the broken piece and give you $94 dollars for it OR
2. We will refund you the price of the entire couch.
What? “Are you saying you want to give me $3000 dollars back after 2 years?” “Yes, Mam, we don’t have it in stock so we will return it and you can buy something else.”
Oddly I panicked and asked if I could call her back. My mind was reeling. I had a dirty broken down white leather couch of which I still loved but I could get a brand new couch for nothing. Hmmmm. What to do, what to do?
I went to the computer and researched Macy’s.com to see which couches they had for sale. No more white white leather couches. I guess Macy’s has learned their lesson in selling white leather couches and offering a warranty.
I hate cream and getting a true pure white couch was really hard the first time. I just kept thinking ” Macy’s and God are giving you another chance to make a better decision this time, Tiffani. Choose wisely, Go dark! ” I hate brown leather couches, but gray would be perfect. But do they have a gray leather couch? They didn’t 2 years ago.
Ahhha, I found one sectional online that was “slate” and appeared to be gray. Ok, I can get that one. I then called Lou and asked him if I should get a new couch. He laughed at me and said “Yay, of course.” I then got Tiara in the car and went to see it in person. Of course they didn’t have one on the floor but I saw the new style in person. It was perfect. I went home called Macy’s and told them I would take a new couch. And now a little glitch. Apparently, I had to buy a new couch with my own money, choose a delivery date and when they delivered the new couch they would take the old one back to the warehouse. Once they processed the old couch they would credit my original method of payment. Hmmm, that would be a maxed out credit card, yikes! I then had to convince Lou they would actually credit us the money back because as you know we don’t have an extra $3,000 dollars lying around to spend on furniture. We don’t have an extra $100 bucks at this point, unless it is for something our girls need, then we can always find the money somehow. Well, I found a way to pay for the couch, went back to the store with Trinity and told the lady what I wanted. She said that the slate couch wasn’t supposed to be in stock until January, but after checking the computer, she found it. She was really surprised it arrived in the warehouse early. She also showed me another couch on the floor room that was in the same slate leather and it was perfect.
I am so excited to have a gray couch which will be so much more difficult for Tiara to destroy. But you know the problem, right? I just don’t think it will look right with my current paint. I have visions of changing the stripes to shiny gold and white, painting the rest of the room white, getting new bar stools, painting the chandelier over the sink grey or black and ………. my brain won’t stop. I have explained to Lou how upsetting this is for me. You see I am concerned we may not get our loan modification and we may eventually lose our home. My other concern is we need to save as much money as possible and not spend money on a house which may be temporary, BUT I spend my entire day here everyday and I can’t mentally live in an ugly, uncoordinated space. He knows this, so I am trying to figure out how to deal with this situation. Tabitha definitely thinks we need to paint, Trinity doesn’t want to paint. I have agreed to wait until the couch arrives on December 17 to make any changes. Wish me luck! Ohhhhh.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

First off, I love that they are going to pick up the tab for a new couch. I swear Macy’s is awesome for this and so many more reasons. One of the reasons, I continue to shop there is that their return, warranty and exchange policies are truly the best and you totally proved this by this post alone. Exciting about the new couch and I know you too well, that took will be painted come hell or high water!! 🙂 xoxo!!
