Someone please explain this new trend….

May. 24, 2012

pampered pup

I have been wondering for months why is it I see as many dogs in strollers as I see kids.  I am not trying to be rude, but the whole phenomenon is totally baffling to me.  When we bought our dog almost 6 years ago I was an avid watcher of the Dog Whisperer since I was and still am a little clueless in the dog department.  I never once heard Cesar advise people to walk their dog in a stroller.  While walking on Balboa Island during the weekend, every 3rd dog is in a stroller.  OK, I might be exaggerating a little but not that much.  On Monday while trying to find a parking spot in the UCLA medical complex I saw a man in his 40’s pushing his dog in a stroller into the medical building.  Really, is that even allowed?  It was at that moment I decided I had to blog about this issue and see what everyone else thought.  I actually contemplated the possible reasons why people feel compelled to walk their dogs in strollers.

  • They actually think their dogs are humans?
  • They think their dogs are not physically able to walk 2- 3miles at a time?
  • Their beautifully groomed babies are actually really mean and might attack all the other dogs, so the stroller is for the protection of society at large?
  • Their dog is perfect and they don’t want the other loser dogs sniffing their precious pup.?
  • It is so much easier to walk your dog in the stroller than on a leash because they can’t pull and tug and drive you crazy.
Now, that I have thought this through, I would love to put my 65 pound standard poodle in a stroller.  Life would be so much easier for Lou who walks our crazy dog everyday.  He wouldn’t get his arm pulled out of the socket or fall off his bike when Bailey takes off after a cat.  Well, I researched the strollers and they range in cost from $50 to $200 but none of them mentioned carrying such a large dog.  Maybe that is why I have never seen a Doberman or German Shepherd in a stroller?  Hmmm, Now that I think about it, I have only seen beautifully groomed, mostly white fluffy dogs being strolled.  Ohh, I didn’t realize maybe they don’t want their dogs to get dirty.  I like it, I hate it when my dog is dirty and smelly.  I could save lots of money on grooming bills.
Bailey's new ride

This is the most expensive version.  Maybe I could fit Tiara and Bailey in the stroller and then her crayons wouldn’t fall over the sidewalk as we walk.  I could put my phone in there with the music on and I wouldn’t have to change the iPod constantly and she could give Bailey lots of TT love.   I am liking this more and more.  This is giving me an idea.  Maybe I will design a stroller the size of a mini cooper for older kids, say 6-18 year olds.  I would make it air conditioned, put in a little table for coloring and I could push Tiara all over town getting great exercise and keeping her contained in one spot.  I might never go home.  I could just walk and walk until bed and then hose it down at the end of the day. LOL

Clearly I have gone off on a ridiculous tangent and so I better conclude before someone reports me to Social Services.

Yeah, it is almost the weekend!!!

Lol Tiff! I may have to get Roxy a stroller for our walks, but would we both fit on the sidewalk?

Great Story. I read it to my girlfriend who stated while “garage sale-ing” last weekend, she kept expecting to see cute babies in strollers, only to look and find it was a dog…So even in central California this trend is rampant!

You think that’s crazy……my sister has a stroller for her two spoiled persian cats that she takes on walks around the neighborhood. Now that’s nuts!

Who is tiffani?

Mom, Wife, author of Loving Tiara, retired home stager, and chronic volunteer. I laugh when I'm happy, nervous, or stressed, so basically, I'm always laughing, and you can hear me from down the block if the windows are open. I love to swear even though it isn't ladylike, and I'm brutally honest, but in a super nice way, or so I think? I tend to roll my eyes, and apparently, my face is very expressive because even when I don't open my mouth, everyone knows what I'm thinking. My hubby and I are homebodies; I'm obsessed with always doing the "right thing " and taking care of my skin. I love learning, am always trying to evolve as a human being, and am a bit of a perfectionist. Let's have some fun! xoxo tiffani
