As you know I have been leaving hints as to the big change I was going to do for my 43rd birthday today and as you can see from the picture, I dyed my hair red.
I have had blonde hair my entire life and wanted to do something fun and dramatic for my birthday. Lots of women around Newport get a sports car in their 40’s to drive around during the day when their kids are in school. Others get a boob job, some go on a serious spin/pilates/yoga workout regimen, others go skydiving, and some divorce their husbands, but since I am not going to do any of those, I decided to change my hair color instead.
You may be thinking, how fun red! Well, I am not just going red, but several other colors too. During the next year I am going to change the color of my hair at least 4 times. I know, crazy, but true. I am pretty sure, I look best as a blonde, but I don’t care, I am doing it even though I probably won’t look as good. I figure now is my last chance to have a little fun with my look before I am too old and wrinkly.
I came up with the idea about a month ago, and asked one of my best friends what she thought. She suggested I contact Tina Scoville, who is a color specialist, and see if she would be interested in helping me. She told me Tina was an expert in color, super nice and would probably love being apart of my year long hair color adventure. As always, my friend was right and Tina agreed to help me in exchange for advertising space on my blog. How awesome is that! Since Tina only does color, she commissioned her friend, Sandra Slaga, who also works in the salon, to cut my hair and be apart of the journey.
I knew I needed some serious professionals since I have been coloring my own hair for 2 years, cut my own bangs and a get a trim maybe twice a year at some random place I find on Groupon. I also knew, I couldn’t afford to pay for what I really wanted to do, and I needed someone who wouldn’t let my hair fall out.
So last Friday was the big day. My mother in law offered to watch Tiara for as long as I needed, as Tina told me it may take a long time. I was so nervous, I had a serious stomach ache. My sister called to check in on me and was like “what is wrong, you sound stressed?” “I am, I feel so sick.” She then responded, “you know, you don’t have to do this.” “Of course I do, I already made the commitment in my mind and told people. I am doing it whether I like it or not!”
During the 4 1/2 hour process, Tabitha and my sister were texting me pictures of themselves cheering me on. It was very cute. I was sending Lou updates, but he was super nervous about the whole thing and wasn’t a total fan. I knew he would be fine, eventually and he is now.
Once I got to the salon, I felt better instantly. Tina was so sweet and excited to help me. The salon is small but chic and everyone is so friendly. I loved it and knew I was in good hands.
I showed her 2 pictures and she knew based on my coloring which one would be best and set off to mix the color right away. Because I am a natural blonde, we had to fill my hair first, then color it. After the first coloring, she dried it and checked the color. We decided the ends needed more cooper, so she colored it again. Then washed it again and then put on a cellophane for shine. We planned on trying to cut it on Friday, but Sandra was literally swamped with clients. I am getting it cut right now, maybe as you read this. I will post a new picture on Instagram, which will show up at the bottom of my home page, if you want to see the fabulous new trim she gave me.
The cool thing about Tina Scoville’s salon is that they only use Davine’s hair color. Apparently this hair color company, which is family owned in Parma, Italy has a cult following. It is the most green hair care company on the planet. Check out this link to their site, describing how they are trying to save the universe and still make hair look beautiful.
So, I am loving my new hair. Monday morning was the first time I woke up and recognized myself in the mirror. Apparently it takes 48 hours for your eyes and brain to adjust to a change, but it took me a little longer. It will be interesting to see how different people treat me with the red as opposed to the blonde hair. I am already noticing a slight difference. The guy in the market who stocks the fruit didn’t say “Hi” like usual and the girl trying to sell root beer floats to raise money for cancer asked everyone around me to donate, but not me. Huh? Thinking I look a little intimidating?
Anyway, if you have any suggestions for my next color change, let me know, I would love to hear your ideas.
Thank You again Tina Scoville and Sandra Slaga!!

I was thinking the same thing, that you look like one of those actresses with you new color. So funny, my husband has been asking me to dye my hair red….(I think he wants a new girlfriend too !!!) I actually have red dye in my bathroom, but can’t get the nerves up to use it. I’ve been the SAME color my whole life too….hard to bust out of the mold ! We’ll see….you have got the juices flowing over here…..Well, enjoy the “new” you !!! 🙂

I am thinking you should try it but with help, not the box for the first time. When I colored my own hair, I had a friend who was a former stylist buy me real hair dye at Mally’s. I have heard scary stories about the box even though I have seriously considered it myself. Have fun, we are getting old quick, do it!!! xoxo
