Mini-me and I on a mission

Nov. 13, 2012

Ever since Trinity was a toddler people started calling her mini-me.  I guess it is because she has the blondest hair, well natural blonde that is, talks constantly like me, is super bossy like me AND loves projects, thrift store shopping and anything DIY.

A few weeks ago I finally got over to see my friends new home.  It was really beautiful and I was super impressed by the painted furniture she had in her girls rooms.  When Tabitha was little I painted her desk pink and it didn’t turn out great.  Since then I have kinda given up on painting furniture even though I love how it looks.  Sam inspired me to tackle Trinity’s desk and encouraged me that “it wasn’t so hard!”  I have been promising Trinity for a year, we would paint her desk which was my great grandmother’s and I had yet to do it.  The wood was stained and really dark and made Trinity feel “gloomy” when she sat down to work.

Last week I came home and said, “OK we are painting the desk what color should we do it?”  We decided on lime green with blue knobs.  I borrowed an electric sander, which is the key to getting a really smooth finish, and we started on Friday at 11am, she didn’t have school that day.

I can’t tell you how much fun I had with the sander.  I think I may have been a construction worker or wood maker in another life.  Anyways, I sanded, primed and painted 2 coats, all in a few hours.  We had it back in the room by that night but we waited until the morning to start using it.  Of course the rest of the house nearly fell apart well I spent the majority of the day focusing on the desk, but it was super worth it!

Doesn’t it look cute?  I was so happy it came out so great I immediately said “OK, now let’s do your dresser.”  She was so happy too, until she realized that she had to empty all the drawers and then would have to put all the clothes back the next day.  “Hummm, how about we do that another day, Mom?”  she said.  I realized that was probably a good idea since my hands were throbbing and I knew they would be a mess in the morning.  I come from a long line of arthritic hands so I have to be careful.

Trinity didn’t have school once again today so she came with us on the morning walk around Balboa Island.  After we got home, Grandma came over to rest with TT and Trinity declared she wanted to go back to the ENC.  If you read my post yesterday you know we went there on Sunday but had to leave after 5 minutes.  The Environmental Nature Center is close to our home and is a treasure.  Once you enter you feel like you have found a piece of nature’s paradise.  We walked around, played with sticks and sat by the creek for almost an hour just relaxing, talking and enjoying nature.

Once we got home we then decided to start on the duct tape flower project.

Trinity loves to make stuff with duct tape but lots of it seems to be without a use and is wasteful.  I have been trying to find something good for her to make besides a zillion wallets, bows and cans covered in duct tape.  I found this tutorial on Duct Tape flowers on this fabulous blog and  Trinity loved the idea.  I surprised her with 2 new rolls of tape I had put aside for her Christmas stocking, but I couldn’t resist giving them to her.  Now I officially have noting bought for Christmas, Oh well.

This flower only took a few minutes to make and now she has big plans for lots more!  Look how cute this is?  She is making me an all silver one for my hair.

Of course after we were done, Tiara wanted to go to Target and get her popcorn.  I so wasn’t in the mood for Target today, but I really didn’t have a choice.  Can you imagine going to Target absolutely every day?  So getting old!   Trinity managed to get me to buy her 2 additional rolls of duct tape and some barrettes for the flowers.  I think I have now spent 18 dollars on the project, have popcorn all over the car and house and Trinity just left for her friend’s house.

At least we had some good Mother daughter bonding time.  I would suggest you visit the ENC  if you live in the area.  It is soooo great and they offer wonderful camps for children.  They aren’t paying me to write this, I just love the place so I am giving them a plug!

xoxo tiffani

Trinity just decided (like after dinner and after my post was all done) she wanted to give away one of her duct tape flower clips to a reader!

Such a sweetie except she is grinding me about how she doesn’t like the way the contest looks.  She definitely is a mini-me

Hope you win!

WOW! I remember ENC when I was young and seeing those pictures sure did bring back memories. It was like stepping into another world & just a few blocks from my childhood home. I’m glad to see it’s still there and thriving.

I can’t wait for Rey to get older to really get into fun mother daughter trips and projects. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun now but I can only imagine what it will be like when she’s older.

Thank you for linking to Raising Imperfection. Please come back Friday to see if you were featured! Happy Thanksgiving! 🙂

Who is tiffani?

Mom, Wife, author of Loving Tiara, retired home stager, and chronic volunteer. I laugh when I'm happy, nervous, or stressed, so basically, I'm always laughing, and you can hear me from down the block if the windows are open. I love to swear even though it isn't ladylike, and I'm brutally honest, but in a super nice way, or so I think? I tend to roll my eyes, and apparently, my face is very expressive because even when I don't open my mouth, everyone knows what I'm thinking. My hubby and I are homebodies; I'm obsessed with always doing the "right thing " and taking care of my skin. I love learning, am always trying to evolve as a human being, and am a bit of a perfectionist. Let's have some fun! xoxo tiffani
