Monday morning I woke up and didn’t have a walking date planned. Tiara was waiting to see her grandmother so I decided to look at the 24 fitness class schedule. I love taking yoga and Pilates but haven’t done either in 2 years because of my life with TT. My membership is $99 a year so even if I don’t enter the facility for a couple of years I always pay the fee, knowing that some day I will return.
The last class I took was in March 2011 right before Tiara’s brain surgery. My favorite teacher ever is Melissa. She has the best music, tells you all these really important facts about why you need to strengthen certain muscles as opposed to others and is in better shape than any woman you have ever seen. Plus she has really great sense of humor. I went online and saw that Melissa was still teaching Pilates Fusion at 10:15 am. I am so going to that class! I mentally rearranged my errand schedule for the day and moved some stuff around to accommodate getting to the class.
My mother in law showed up and I ran to the market and put all my stuff in cold bags and then went straight to the gym. I put my mat in the same spot, front left, as if nothing had changed in 2 two years. Melissa recognized me right away which was rather surprising because no one recognizes me with the hair. I mentally prepared myself for the torture I was about to endure, and told myself that if I couldn’t do all the exercises it was Ok. Obviously I have only been walking for the past 2 years and have totally avoided any strengthening exercises like planks, push-ups or leg lifts, so I knew I would be suffering.
Shockingly enough, I was able to do everything except for this one inner thigh exercise. I had to kinda cheat on that one. My legs were shaking and I woke up sore, but that really good kinda sore. The kind were you can feel your muscles working just to get in and out of the car, but you remember why they hurt and then you feel really happy. So I guess helping Tiara get around and pushing her wheelchair while pulling the grocery cart behind me are more exercise than I realized. I push 170 pounds with right hand and pull about 25 pounds with left hand, so I guess that is exercise.
The rest of the day I felt really happy and up beat. I have now written on my schedule to attend on of her classes each week. I may have to give up a walking date but I realized that adding this class to my life is what I really need right now. Sometimes it’s just the simple things that make us happy and make all the difference.
What do you miss in your life that you need to start doing again?
Have a great day!

This is super great and I don’t know how you scored that $99/year deal but don’t ever let it lapse! Yes, Tiara has kept you in shape. If you spend 2 years eating bon bons on the couch, you’ll be in sorry shape but you physically wrestle with a teenager every day in a multitude of ways – that is bound to keep you on your toes physically. See, a silver lining around every cloud.

I miss reading and walking. I can’t walk in the cold New England weather but can’t wait for spring and I need to make time to read each day even if it is only 10 minutes.
Thank you for the reminder to take some time for myself.
