Valentine’s Day, just more work for me!

Feb. 14, 2013

This is how much I care about Valentine’s Day.  Zero.  This was my conversation Wednesday morning while Lou was getting ready for work.

Lou:  So are we exchanging Valentine’s?

Me:  Well, I made cookies for my sister’s kids, and plan on baking something for our Mom’s.  I bought each girl something small and I was planning on making you a card, but I doubt I will get around to it.  So, NO.

Lou:  Ok, good, I haven’t gotten you a card either.  Love you, BYE.

I used to love to make homemade Valentine’s with the kids for all the student in their classes but now the only one in school is Trinity.  I bought her all the supplies and was so excited but she complained the whole time that she hates to make them.  “Why can’t I just buy them like the other kids?”

me:  “Because anyone can buy them at Target, making them is special and shows you care.”

trin:  “What if I don’t really care?

me:  “Well, you should.”

And then there is the Tiara issue.  Anytime anyone takes out a pen, a glue stick or any art supply aside from a crayon she is on you like flies on poop.  It is practically impossible to create anything artistic without her destroying it.  She is so obsessed with pens that I keep all the pens in a cup and have to change the hiding spot to different cabinets all the time  because she finds them and goes straight to the couch to start coloring.

I still buy my girl’s little Valentine gifts because Valentine’s Day seems really important when you are a child or single, so I try to celebrate for them.

Oh I forgot our tradition.  Every year I bake a yellow cake with chocolate frosting in the shape of a heart.  As I am writing this I am realizing that a put a lot of effort into Valentine’s Day for everyone except my true Valentine, Louie.  But he wouldn’t have it any other way.  He likes that he can depend on me to always make the holidays special for our girls and do something for everyone in our family.  I used to be really good and send everyone cards, but I’m too tired now lately.

I will end with a funny story of Lou and I.  Our first Valentine’s Day as a couple, we were apart.  I was in Europe and he was in San Diego.  He sent me a few different cards and then bought me a dozen Mrs. Field’s cookies and sent them with my parents who were coming to visit me in France.  With the cookies he sent another card.  When I opened it, I was expecting a super romantic, lovely card declaring his love for me but instead it was a goofy card.  An extra large card with a huge ape on the front blowing kisses.  When I opened it he had written me a letter  which started something like this:

“Dear Tiffani,

I miss you so much.  I started back at the gym and was practicing my wrestling and got a weird rash.  I went to the doctor and he said I had mat disease from wrestling on dirty mats.  Hopefully the medicine will clear it up.  Miss you and love you.

Louie”

I mean who the heck writes that in a Valentine’s card?   I remember just shaking my head from side to side and I kept thinking, “That’s a really weird card, but he is so sweet and cute.  Oh well !”

Hope you have great Valentine’s Day!

Lou’s card about the rash was hilarious and I would have married him, too. I love that – someone who’s not suave enough to put on all of the charm. I had friends who loved guys who were “flirts” and “super romantic” and they were the biggest dogs in town. I always say if you describe your man as a “flirt,” run girl, run! That’s a man carving out opportunities and one day….

Your husband seems true blue and a nice guy interested in what’s important and real vs. any hype. You have to love that. It’s why you’re married so long.

I made little Valentine’s Day gift bags for my daughter’s friends at school and I think, overall, it’s a cute day for kids and teens but for adults? Nah…seems like contrived affection. Not my style. But I’m not knocking it if it works for someone else.

I feel the same, Valentine’s Day does seem like contrived affection but it works for some, like you said, so let them have it!

Laughing out loud about the lovely rash sentiment!!! Thank you for that, priceless…

Last night, my fiance INSISTED that I open this huge box of chocolates. “Im too full! I can’t eat any chocolate right now!” I protested. He is so simple and sentimental, I think he just wanted me to open it up and gaze at all the confectionary delights…

When I opened it, the chocolates were melted and some of them had funny spots!! You could have heard a pin drop- he was so sad!! (OMG, what’s the big deal??? It’s just a box of chocolate!!) But he was so disappointed!!! So funny, and kind of cute at the same time.

It goes to show that most men are really pretty simple, just like you said in your sweet post about Lou this week:) If we can appreciate that as women, I think our relationships will flourish:)
    xoxo

Our local take and bake pizza place has heart shaped pepperoni pizzas for $7. Super easy way to feed your family on Valentine’s Day!

Love your first Valentine’s Day story 🙂

23 Valentine’s Days ago, I was living in an apartment off campus. The guy who was assigned to share a garage with me left me red roses tied to the mirror on my car, with a note asking for a date. Now it’s been 20+ years of marriage, 2 kids, and a move half way across the country. We smile at Valentine’s Day 🙂 xoxo Robin

My husband and I are not celebrating at all because we broke the bank with the kids! Olivia brought treat bags for her classmates today and then I had to make special food for them to bring so we wouldn’t break the diet over some lame red heart lolly pop! You should have seen me last night running around like a freak trying to get all this ready!
    I should Vlogged it!

Who is tiffani?

Mom, Wife, author of Loving Tiara, retired home stager, and chronic volunteer. I laugh when I'm happy, nervous, or stressed, so basically, I'm always laughing, and you can hear me from down the block if the windows are open. I love to swear even though it isn't ladylike, and I'm brutally honest, but in a super nice way, or so I think? I tend to roll my eyes, and apparently, my face is very expressive because even when I don't open my mouth, everyone knows what I'm thinking. My hubby and I are homebodies; I'm obsessed with always doing the "right thing " and taking care of my skin. I love learning, am always trying to evolve as a human being, and am a bit of a perfectionist. Let's have some fun! xoxo tiffani
