Well, I screamed so loud and so aggressively yesterday, I practically peed my pants. It so serves me right, as I was bragging just two days ago, about how I know how to clean up any crazy mess. Well, Tiara showed me.
Last year when Tiara was in a coma, I used to paint her nails all the time in the hospital. All the nurses and doctors used to comment on the pretty colors and decorations on her nails. I feel like she could hear them because ever since last year she has been really into me painting her nails. As you can imagine keeping her hands still while I paint and they dry is a huge undertaking. She has been harassing me for 2 days to paint them. She follows me around and shoves her hands in my face and says “nails, nails, blue, red, purple….”
So yesterday afternoon, everyone was gone except for the two of us, so I took the time to paint her nails. I did each nail a different color because she can never decide on only a few colors. I then blew them dry with the hair dryer. They looked great, she was super happy and I was feeling like I did my good mommy deed for the day. Looking back I had a inkling something was going to go wrong because when I put the nail polish container back under the sink, I usually stick it on top of the other two storage containers. But for some reason yesterday, I stashed it under the other 2 other containers so it would be harder for her to get to, if she happened to be foraging around under my sink.
So about an hour later I was in the kitchen making the appetizer I mentioned yesterday, when all of a sudden it was too quiet. I went into our bedroom and she was in my bathroom with the door closed. This isn’t unusual because she is obsessed with all doors being closed at all times. I walked into my bathroom expecting to find her playing in the shower with the shampoo or sitting on the floor in a puddle of pee. She wears a diaper, but actually likes to go into the bathroom area to do her business.
Yes, she was sitting on the ground, but not in a puddle of pee, but a puddle of nail polish. Nail polish was everywhere. All over her hands, her legs, her arms, my floor, and my sink. And that is when I let out the loudest scream you have ever heard, not once but several times. I then wanted to kill her, but I took a deep breathe and thought “what should I do, where do I start?” “Don’t move, and I mean it!” I said to her in my sternest voice. I then ran to the living room, grabbed my phone and took a picture. I put the phone down, took a few more deep breaths and ordered her into the shower. She kept saying “sorry, sorry, apologize.” She knew I was crazy mad.
I figured it wouldn’t be safe to drench her in nail polish remover, so what ever didn’t come off in the shower would have to wear itself off eventually. While she was in the shower I started in on the floor with cotton and nail polish remover. The big stuff came up, there is just a lot of blue and pink in the grooves, which I have yet to tackle. I took all the open bottles, put on the lids and shoved them back into the container that was filled with nail polish. I left it a huge mess and put it at the top of my closet. Once again, I have yet to revisit that container. I think it will take it a week until I can clean it up without freaking out and getting angry again.
Of course I had to clean quickly because she was out of the shower in 5 minutes since she doesn’t know how to wash her own hair or soap up, she was just standing under the running water apologizing over and over again. Within minutes of getting her dried off and dressed my guests arrived. Lucky for her we were having company or I may have kept on yelling the rest of the night.
So now it is Friday and Lou works today, Sunday and Monday, open until close. My mother in law is out of town until Tuesday, my parents are out of town until Sunday and I had to let the girl go that started helping me last week. So it is Trinity, Tabitha and Tiara and I solo this weekend. UGH!!!
Happy Labor Day!!!

I’ve been there – we have a 4 year old “on the spectrum” son who has been very potty training resistant. He had an affinity for pooping in the tub. Its so hard when you know they have a barrier to understanding limits on actions, self restraint.
I’m in awe of how well you have adapted to your situation, truly heroic.
Take care – and break out the fine sandpaper…

I was just thinking about you this morning, and didn’t have time to post on your wall. God only gives us what we can handle, so just realize how strong you are!!! xoxo

Wow. I just discovered this post on bloggy moms.com and I am so impressed with your patience and how well you handled the situation. It is an inspiration. Truly. Love that you got the camera. That is what I try to do when I want to scream (i’ve given up yelling for 365 days, on day 202). It gives me a moment to pull myself together and find perspective. I am going to remember this post as another way to find perspective. I hope your weekend goes well.

Oh Tiffany…my 3 1/2 year old sends me to the same place. I am looking forward to a new white couch some day. Really, what was I thinking 🙂
Anyway, I am so impressed with your ability to laugh at yourself, put things away until you can deal with them rationally and try new ways to cope. You are such a positive gift to your children! Blessings for a fun-filled weekend.
