Today started out great because when I woke up I realized they had decreased the ventilator settings during the night and they were the lowest they have been and her oxygen levels were still good. I knew it was the right day to take her off the ventilator.
I walked over to the bed to check her diaper and see if there was another huge poop mess like we had been dealing with all night but her diaper was clean except for some urine. “Oh my Gosh, she went pee, I shrieked to the nurse. The nurse came in and started a happy dance since Tiara hadn’t gone in 4 days. The dialysis has been cleaning her blood but I was starting to really worry about her kidneys as were the doctors. I almost cried I was so happy to see that wet diaper. Shift change comes and in walks our favorite nurse, this is really going to be a great day!
She had dialysis from 9 am until noon and then they took out the breathing tube right when she was done and she did great! She is now breathing on a simple mask.
Oddly she hasn’t woken up as much as we expected but she did smile for the camera and when Tabitha showed up and asked if she wanted her ears cleaned, she really smiled big. Tiara loves for Tabitha to look down her ears with a flashlight and talk about how dirty they are. Whenever Tab comes home at the end of the day the first thing Tiara always says to her is: ears, ears?” It is really cute. Tabitha arrived with her box of q-tips and mag lite today and went to work on her ears. After that Tiara slept most of the day while Tab and I watched Netflix. The pooping never stopped and I was really starting to wonder if she had c-diff so the nurse sent off a sample and within hours we got the results, which were positive. Ugh!!!
She had c-diff at Ucla and got through it fine so I am hoping the medicine will start working right away. Basically c-diff lives in everyone’s gut but we are protected from it growing and making us sick by having good bacteria in the gut. When a person is on IV antibiotics for an extended period of time all the good bacteria gets killed off and c-diff can grow out of control. Funny enough they treat c-diff with another antibiotic. Ohhhhh, probably too much medical info but, nevertheless despite the c-diff showing up it was still a great day for Tiara.
She has yet to urinate again but her blood work looked better so I have faith her kidneys are still improving. Hopefully tomorrow we will see our feisty Tiara back in action with a big wet diaper.
So many of you have offered to help and we truly appreciate all the offers but we there isn’t really anything we need. If you really feel compelled to do something you can always send Tiara a card and I will show it to her when she is more awake. She loves cards.
Thank you for all the continued prayers and good thoughts, they truly make all the difference in the world.
