Last September I embarked on a year long hair color journey. I went from a lifetime of long blonde hair to:
then darker drown and cut off 8 inches
and now brown with color blocking and heavy bangs.
I found 2 amazing stylists, Tina Scoville, who does my color and Sandra Slaga, who does my cut to help me with this transformation. Both of these women are super talented, professional, very friendly and reasonably priced. The reason I mention the price is because I have been approached by readers who assume going to Tina and Sandra is out of their league financially, which if you live in Orange County is so NOT TRUE.
Based on my experience they charge what most other highly trained, stylist’s charge. These are their prices:
Tint $90 /Partial weave $135/Full weave $160 /Cut $75
Now for my current look, it may not seem that different to you in the pictures but the color and tone are very different in person. Tina took these easi mesche papers shown below and lightened sections of my hair with the color blocking process. The papers stick to each other and aren’t folded up like foil. She brushes the color onto the hair with the paper underneath and then puts another paper on top. While they were processing she put a tint on my roots and combed it through the rest of my hair. I waited a little while and then she washed it all out together and followed with a toner.
What I love about the color blocking is it gives women with dark hair a subtle way to add color and dimension without just throwing in some really obvious highlights. Sandra described it like “little kid hair”. It looks really cool in the sun.
This time Sandra cut my hair the same as last time but we changed up the bangs. The cool think about this cut is I wore the ends flipped out for 2 months and now with the bangs I like it better blown under so I am going to wear it like this until next time. Funny enough I had almost this exact same hair cut in 1982 and loved it back then, just like now.
When friends and readers like a new color or cut they always say” Oh, keep this look,I like it.” Lots of people don’t realize that even if I love my current look I am committed to changing it the next time I get my hair done.
This journey is all about change and discovering how it feels to each time I make a change. Through this process, I have learned that I love changing my hair. It is totally addicting and fun!
I have also learned that people are NOT as nice to me as a redhead. They seemed scared of me? I love having brown hair and am shocked by this discovery. I always thought brown hair was kinda boring but actually it is anything but boring. It makes me feel mysterious and sexy.
I have also realized that I am not sure if I will ever grow my hair long again. When my hair is shoulder length, like now, I tend to fix it and wear it down everyday but when it was long I wore it in a pony tail almost everyday. I love my new heavy bangs but feel kinda edgy with them. I feel like one of those girls you would find outside a bar smoking. Have no idea why I think this but that’s how I feel.
The whole thing has been so much fun and I can’t thank Tina and Sandra enough for helping me with this journey.
If you are bored with your hair or never seem to be happy with the color or cut your regular stylist is doing, don’t suffer, make a change! It’s not that hard to try a new stylist. I have done it many times and yes it is hard the first time but life is hard and don’t you deserve to be super happy with your hair? Call my ladies!

One last thing: had such a hard time getting a decent picture today! Haven’t had botox in a while and it was super obvious in my pictures and driving me crazy. So when some of you tell me how pretty I am, glad you think so because I felt so old and ugly today. I seriously hate getting OLD, it sucks!!!
