Last night after dinner, Trinity was a bundle of nerves worrying about the Monster Mile today. As we were watching the Olympics, she just kept staring at Lou and I with this worried expression. So I asked her, “what is the worst thing that could happen tomorrow? ” I could die!” “Ok, the lifeguards are not going to let you die, they will be everywhere in the water watching over all the swimmers”. I then explained that “the worst thing that could happen is you try your best and not finish. “If you try your best that’s all that matters, so who cares if you don’t finish?” Lou then went on to remind her that the surf was horrible last year and the current was against her the whole time and yet she still finished. The expected current and ocean conditions for today, were good, nothing like last year.
We then changed the subject to discuss who would be staying at the beach and watching the whole event and who would be going home with TT. She wanted her Dad to stay, so we developed a plan where we would take two cars and he would put his bike on the back of the car so he could ride to the end of the running portion and get pictures of her going into the water. We all went, except Tabitha who was working, and watched the kids parade around in their costumes and then stood on the pier to watch them take off on the run. After the run, I started back to the car with Tiara and came up with a brilliant idea. I was feeling bummed about not seeing her swim in at the end so I decided to call my mother in law to come babysit. She had just come over yesterday and I only like her to come every other day because otherwise Tiara becomes totally obsessed with her and drives me crazy. I decided to break my rigid routine and just do it. She agreed to come right over.
As I was driving back home, I noticed there was not a parking spot to be seen anywhere. How was I going to get her home and get back to the beach and find a parking spot in time to see Trin finish? I’ll ride my bike, but will I make it in time? I called Lou and asked him if he thought I would make it back in time. “She is a slow swimmer hon, I think you can make it.” FYI, we live about 5 1/2 miles from the beach. As soon as I got home, my mother in law was waiting and I knew I had to be quick. I threw on my bathing suit bottoms, since I was wearing a skirt and knew I didn’t have time to change. I figured at least if my skirt flew up everyone would see my bathing suit instead of my underwear as I raced on my cruiser to the beach.
Of course the wind was against me and by mile two I was seriously sweating and out of breath. I was riding as fast as I could but it seemed so much harder than usual. Lou later told me when he put my bike away that both of my tires were flat. So typical of me, no wonder it was hard!
Once I got on the ferry, I texted Lou, “I’m on the ferry, almost there.” And what did he text me back, “Hurry, she is at the pier and about to swim under towards the finish.” “Crap!” I rode across the street cutting off tourists right and left and was running my bike up the pier and ran into Lou running down the pier towards the finish line. “Here, take the camera she is at the last buoy, I’ll lock your bike.” “No, No, you take the picture, what if I miss her and can’t see her?” “Just Go, Tiffani, she has on the purple fins.”
I ran through the sand with my tennis shoes still on and my big camera aimed towards the shore. As I needled my way to the front of the pack of parents, I saw her coming in. I made it just in time! As she came up to the shore, I started snapping pictures and all of the sudden a huge wave came crashing way up to the shore, drenching my tennis shoes and knocking Trinity onto the sand just as she was making her grand finish. She got back up and ran up through the receiving line with a big smile. We celebrated with lunch at Ruby’s and now are getting ready to go see the “Victorious” concert at the fair tonight. Not looking forward to being out that late at a concert, but I guess that is life as a parent.
Always doing things we don’t want, just to make our kids happy and make memories.
Have a wonderful weekend!!!!
